Hot Bats Carry ‘Phins in Stetson Double Feature

Danielle Baker makes contact.

DELAND, Fla. – Danielle Baker, Heather Roberts, Madison Ragan and Serena Quinata each logged multiple-hit games as Jacksonville University softball downed Stetson 8-4 and 8-2 in a doubleheader Friday at Patricia Wilson Field.

The first four batters in the JU order combined to go 15-for-30 with 12 runs and 12 RBI. Roberts was a perfect three-for-three with a home run, walk, three runs and three RBI in game one. Baker led the way with two dingers in game two.

Madison Kaufman (2-0) earned the win in game one, tossing three innings in relief of Alyssa Bilodeau. Kaufman held the Hatters (25-23, 3-13) to one run. In game two, it was Ragan who was credited with the win, holding Stetson scoreless on three hits in three and two-thirds innings. She also had a solo home run in the sixth. Tori Perkins (16-13) and Jaime Tino (8-7) were the Hatters' pitchers of record in games one and two, respectively.

With the wins, JU (26-26, 7-9) clinched the No. 5 seed in the ASUN Softball Championship tournament.

Game One

Roberts and Ragan set the tone early in game one. Roberts hit a two-out single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Ragan to put JU up 1-0.

Stetson answered in the second on a two-RBI single by Kasey Fava.

In the third, JU struck back. McCourt hit a one-out double and moved to third on a single by Baker. After Baker stole second, Roberts was intentionally walked in favor of facing Ragan, who tied the game with and RBI-single. With the bases still loaded, Daniels ripped a two-RBI single to center to give JU a 4-2 lead.

The Hatters closed to lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the same inning, but the Dolphins posted another crooked number in the fourth. A leadoff single by Kristen Griffith and a walk by Quinata set the table for Roberts' three-run homer.

Jacksonville added one more run in the fifth. Griffith reached base and took second on an error, moved to third on a Quinata sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Baker single.

Another RBI by Fava in the bottom of the fifth closed the JU lead to 8-4, but it would be the only run allowed by Kaufman and Ragan, who logged the game's final three outs in succession.

Game Two

JU starter Seana Mora and Tino traded zeros through the game's first two frames before the Dolphins broke through in the third. Quinata led off the inning with a walk, setting up a two-run homer by Baker.

The Hatters tied the game in the fourth on a solo shot by Maggie Fritts and an RBI by Fava.

In the sixth, JU re-took the lead on a pair of solo home runs by Baker and Ragan. In the seventh, the Dolphins put it out of reach.

Back-to-back singles by Quinata and McCourt put runners on first and second for Roberts, who loaded the bases with a single up the middle. Ragan singled to make it 6-2. Jacqueline Hodskins reached on an error to make it 7-2. A sacrifice fly by Daniels made it 8-2.

Jacksonville wraps the Stetson series and the regular season Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Patricia Wilson Field.
